Description This Powerpoint presentation file from the EB 2019 Career Symposium features Kathy Ryan Brooks, PhD, FAPS of US Army Institute of Surgical Research, who discusses how military laboratories offer physiologists the opportunity to perform research directed at "real-world" problems such as improving combat casualty care. However, the military laboratory environment is very different than the academic environment in terms of research (requirements-driven vs academic freedom), funding, and hierarchical structure. This talk offers tips on how to 1) find jobs in a military lab; 2) make a successful transition from academic training to working in a military lab; and, 3) be competitive for promotion and progression within the lab structure. The talk will be relatively short with time left to answer questions from the audience.
