Description Collection Description
Resources for Teaching Gastrointestinal Physiology and Metabolism

How were the items in this collection used?
Upon review of these items I improved my lecture of GI physiology. I followed up with students with the included quiz.

Who used this collection?
Undergraduate lower level anatomy and physiology students.

Which of the V&C Core Concepts does this collection address?
Structure & Function ('Basic units of structure define the function of all living things.')
The microanatomy of the digestive tract complements its function for absorption of nutrients.

Information Flow, Exchange, and Storage ('The growth and behavior of organisms are activated through the expression of genetic information in context.')
Hormone production, secretion and communication in digestion is genetically activated and controlled.

Pathways and Transformations of Energy and Matter ('Biological systems grow and change by processes based upon chemical transformation pathways and are governed by the laws of thermodynamics.')
The processes of digestion and metabolism are chemical in nature. Large food molecules are broken down in digestion to give humans nutrients as building blocks and fuel.

Systems ('Living systems are interconnected and interacting.')
Humans interconnect with plants and animals for food to survive and thrive.

Which of the V&C Core Competencies and Disciplinary Practices does this collection address?
Ability to Tap into the Interdisciplinary Nature of Science ('Biology is an interdisciplinary science.')
Human survival depends upon obtaining food and digesting it. This involves plants, animals, nutrition, chemistry.

Ability to Understand the Relationship between Science and Society ('Biology is conducted in a societal context.')
The preparation, consumption and digestion of food is scientific and a large part of the human social experience.

Please enter suggestions for colleagues.
Immediately following lecture I presented the MS Powerpoint quiz as a pop-quiz to check understanding. Upon completion we immediately reviewed to allow students to see the areas that needed further clarification. Bonus points were given for quiz completion.
