Description Collection Description
Items in the collection are useful in development of a course in computational physiology.

How were the items in this collection used?
The journal article title "Bridging different perspectives of the physiological and mathematical disciplines" can be used to set the basic framework for a 1-semester course with ideas for topics, class activities, and assessments. The other resources are interactive simulation packages that can be downloaded or used while connected to the internet. Simulations can be used to explore physiological processes as well as conduct experiments based on mathematical models of physiological function.

Who used this collection?
I have used each of these resources in designing and implementing a new course in computational physiology.

Which of the V&C Core Concepts does this collection address?
Structure & Function ('Basic units of structure define the function of all living things.')
The inter-connected relationship between structure and function is the foundation upon which all models and simulations are selected and manipulated for use in the course.

Pathways and Transformations of Energy and Matter ('Biological systems grow and change by processes based upon chemical transformation pathways and are governed by the laws of thermodynamics.')
Physical and chemical principles are used to set up the parameters that are manipulated in the models or simulations. Written reports based on simulation results depend on interpreting the transformation of energy and matter as reflected quantitatively.

Which of the V&C Core Competencies and Disciplinary Practices does this collection address?
Ability to Use Quantitative Reasoning ('Biology relies on applications of quantitative analysis and mathematical reasoning.')
Running the simulations produces output data sets that students are required to graph and interpret. Student choice of parameters for manipulation will affect output that is useful for class discussions and presentations.

Ability to Use Modeling and Simulation ('Biology focuses on the study of complex systems.')
Students will be using the models for each class period. As comfort with the mechanics of using the software increases, student understanding of the physiology modeled or simulated also increases.

Please enter suggestions for colleagues.
These resources can be used in conjunction with classic papers on physiological models, review papers, as well as physiology textbooks.
