Description This is the fourth lesson in the six-lesson curriculum “The Science and Ethics of HIV Vaccine Research,” developed by NWABR. The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand ethical considerations related to testing vaccines in humans. Students will brainstorm their own rules for performing research trials with human participants, and then examine historical cases that have influenced research guidelines for human research participants. After comparing their guidelines to existing guidelines for research with human participants and the bioethical principles of respect for persons, beneficence and justice, students determine which guidelines were violated in each of the case studies and how those guidelines affect HIV vaccine development. This will prepare students to later apply their understanding of ethical guidelines to their own research proposals (“The Science and Ethics of HIV Vaccine Research” Lesson Six).
